We take altitude seriously, and proper preparation begins before the trail officially starts. Since this trail gains altitude gradually — moving from Shimla (2,200 m) to Kalpa, then progressively higher through Tabo, Kaza, and finally Kunzum La — the route itself is designed to acclimatize you naturally over the first few days.

We carry a medical oxygen cylinder and first-aid kit in our vehicle at all times, and the itinerary is paced to avoid any rapid altitude gain on a single day.

This is a road-based journey with no strenuous trekking involved, making it accessible to anyone with reasonable mobility. Most photography stops involve short walks from the vehicle. We maintain a slow, unhurried pace throughout the entire journey to ensure everyone travels comfortably, particularly at higher altitudes around Kaza, Komic, and Kunzum La.

For daytime shooting, you should aim to cover a focal length range from 24mm to 200mm to properly capture both the grand environmental scale and compression frames of distant peaks. A versatile mid-range zoom (like a 24-70mm) or sharp prime lenses are highly recommended for daily landscapes and cultural portraits. Because gear can quickly become heavy in high-altitude environments, you should only pack a 70-200mm telephoto lens if you are completely comfortable managing its carry weight during active field shooting.

For our dedicated night sessions at Gonbo Rangjon, a fast wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/1.4 to f/2.8 and a highly stable, sturdy tripod are absolutely essential for clean astrophotography tracking. Additionally, a cable release (or remote shutter trigger) is a very important tool to bring along for these night shots, ensuring you can trip the shutter without introducing micro-shake to your long exposures.

Mountain weather fluctuates significantly across this trail. During the day, expect pleasant, clear conditions ranging from 14°C to 20°C in the lower Kinnaur stretch, dropping progressively as we gain altitude toward Kaza and Chandratal. After sunset and at high points like Kunzum La, temperatures drop sharply, often reaching between 0°C and -2°C. Layering is key — we will provide a complete packing checklist prior to departure.

Regarding accommodations, it is important to note that this is not a luxury trip. While we carefully select the best available options to ensure every stay is clean, comfortable, and well-managed, several of these are remote high-altitude areas. In Kalpa, Tabo, and Kaza, we rest in comfortable hotels or homestays. At Chandratal, we transition into a well-equipped camp for one night. Stays are structured on a twin-sharing basis. Solo travelers will be paired with another participant of the same gender unless single occupancy is explicitly requested in advance (subject to availability and additional charges).

Absolutely, you are welcome to join. However, please keep in mind that because this is a dedicated photography expedition, our daily schedule is built around an intentional, slow pace designed to wait for the right light. We prioritize spending significant time at a few key locations over rushing through a long sightseeing checklist. If you are comfortable with a slower, unhurried rhythm and won’t feel frustrated by spending extended hours at a single location to capture the perfect frame, you will find this a deeply immersive way to experience the landscape and culture of Spiti Valley.

Yes. Because we are traveling through remote, high-altitude terrain, all participants are required to review and sign a standard Risk Liability and Arbitration Agreement Waiver prior to the start of the expedition. This document outlines the inherent risks of travel in the Himalayas and ensures that everyone is fully aligned on safety, personal responsibility, and operational protocols before we hit the trail. Signing this waiver is a mandatory requirement for joining the group.

Because we travel as a group with limited vehicle space, and every participant also carries a dedicated camera bag and tripod, accommodating full-sized, hard-shell suitcases is structurally difficult.

We strictly require everyone to travel light using a compact duffel bag or a small, cabin-sized suitcase instead. To take the guesswork out of packing, we will provide a comprehensive, curated checklist detailing exactly what to bring to all registered participants well before the start of the trip.

Choosing to cancel your slot must be communicated formally via email to lightchasetrails@gmail.com with your complete personal information. The date the email is received will serve as the sole timestamp for calculating applicable fees.

• Cancellations made 30 Days or more prior to departure (On or before August 20): The remaining balance is fully refundable. The initial non-refundable advance booking fee will be retained as a standard processing and administrative charge.
• Cancellations made between 15–29 Days prior to departure (August 21 – September 4): 50% of the balance payment (excluding the advance booking fee) is refundable. The remaining 50% is forfeited to cover committed accommodation and vehicle logistics.
• Cancellations made within 14 Days of departure (From September 5 onwards) or No-Shows: 100% of the total trip fee is forfeited. Because the balance has been fully collected by this point (per the September 4 due date) and all accommodations, permits, and vehicle logistics are fully committed, no refunds or date transfers can be issued.

Important Expedition Terms

• Minimum Participant Quota: A minimum of 5 participants is required to run this expedition. In the highly unlikely event that this threshold is not met by July 25, the trip will be officially canceled, and 100% of all payments—including your deposit—will be refunded immediately.

• Atypical Disruptions: Because we are navigating remote, high-altitude mountain terrain, itinerary adjustments due to sudden landslides, weather anomalies, or state-enforced road closures do not qualify for refunds. We strictly advise all travelers to purchase comprehensive travel insurance to insulate themselves against unexpected trip interruptions.

No, transfers to the pickup point in Shimla and from the drop point in Manali are not included in the trail package and must be covered individually. However, to make your arrival seamless, we will provide all registered participants with trusted local transport coordinator contact numbers so you can easily arrange your onward or return travel.
