Your Ladakh journey begins with arrival in Leh, the capital of this high-altitude desert region. Upon landing, you will be picked up from the airport and transferred directly to the hotel for check-in. To allow your body to properly adjust to the altitude, the rest of the day is dedicated entirely to complete rest and acclimatization.

As the light softens toward evening, we will step out for a relaxed, optional walk through Leh Market and the surrounding streets, capturing the blue hour as it settles over the town. An evening briefing will follow, where we walk through the days ahead, safety protocols, and what to expect from the astrophotography sessions on this trail.

We depart Leh early, climbing steadily toward Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes in the world. We take our time at the top, working the dramatic, wide-open landscapes and the sense of scale that only a pass at this altitude can offer, before descending into the Nubra Valley.

Our first stop in Nubra is Diskit Monastery, home to a towering Maitreya Buddha statue that watches over the valley below. From here, we continue to the Hunder Sand Dunes, an unexpected desert landscape set against snow-capped peaks, where the resident double-humped Bactrian camels add a distinctive character to the frame. We stay through golden hour and sunset, capturing the dunes as the light turns warm across the valley.

Today we venture further into Nubra Valley to Turtuk, one of the last villages before the Line of Control and among the most culturally distinct destinations on this trail. Once part of Baltistan, the village retains a heritage and architecture unlike anywhere else in Ladakh, offering a rich change of pace from the landscapes covered so far.

We spend the day exploring Turtuk on foot, documenting traditional Balti houses built from stone and wood, and photographing daily life along the banks of the Shyok River. The village’s apricot orchards, especially striking in the golden light of late afternoon, offer an ideal setting for environmental portraits and quieter, observational frames before we return to our accommodation in Nubra for the evening.

We depart Nubra Valley and follow the course of the Shyok River as it winds through remote, open terrain toward Pangong Tso. The drive itself offers a striking contrast in scenery, transitioning from the sand dunes of Nubra to the vast, colour-shifting expanse of the lake as we near our destination.

We time our arrival at Pangong for the blue hour, positioning ourselves along the shoreline to capture the lake’s still, mirror-like reflections as the light fades. After dinner, with clear skies overhead, we hold our first dedicated astrophotography session of the trail—framing the Milky Way alongside its reflection across the water, a rare and highly rewarding setup for night photography.

Today marks one of the most significant legs of the trail, both geographically and photographically. We leave Pangong and travel deep into the Changthang region, passing through Chushul and pausing at the Rezang La War Memorial to reflect on its history against the backdrop of vast, empty plains. The drive continues through Tsaga and Loma, with the landscape growing increasingly remote and untouched as we approach Hanle.

We arrive in Hanle in time to photograph Hanle Monastery at sunset, set against the region’s characteristic stark, high-altitude terrain. Tonight also marks the New Moon, and with it, the darkest skies India has to offer. As one of the world’s designated Dark Sky Reserves, Hanle gives us optimal conditions for our primary astrophotography session—capturing the Milky Way core in full clarity, alongside star trails, time-lapses, and deep sky panoramas.

Today we set out from Hanle toward Umling La, the highest motorable road on the planet at 19,024 ft. The drive climbs steadily through Photi La and increasingly remote, high-altitude terrain, with the scale of the Changthang plateau becoming more apparent with every kilometre.

At Umling La, we take our time documenting the sheer scale and starkness of the landscape, with ample opportunity for drone photography across the surrounding panoramas. On the return leg, we stop at the Hanle Observatory viewpoint, home to one of the world’s premier sites for astronomical research. Back at Hanle by evening, and with clear skies permitting, we hold a second astrophotography session—an opportunity to refine techniques and capture additional frames under the region’s exceptional night skies.

We leave Hanle and travel through Nyoma, Mahe, and Sumdo, tracing the edge of the Changthang plateau as it opens into wide, empty grasslands. This region is home to the nomadic Changpa community, and along the route we look for opportunities to document their pastoral way of life, including their prized Pashmina goats grazing across the plains.

By afternoon we arrive at Korzok village, on the shores of Tso Moriri, one of the highest and largest high-altitude lakes in the Changthang region. We spend the evening working the lake’s still reflections as the light shifts through golden hour and into sunset. With the sky remaining exceptionally dark this far from any major settlement, we close the day with our third astrophotography session, framing the Milky Way arching over the lake.

We rise early to catch sunrise over Tso Moriri, when the lake is at its calmest and the surrounding peaks catch the first light of the day. After a final session by the water, we begin our journey back toward Leh, crossing Namshang La before descending into Puga Valley, known for its geothermal hot springs, steam vents, and striking sulphur deposits scattered across the terrain.

Continuing on, we pass through Tso Kar and the More Plains, vast open landscapes that are home to the Wild Kiang, the Tibetan wild ass, often spotted grazing across the grasslands. The drive climbs one final time over Tanglang La, one of the highest passes on the route, before descending steadily back into Leh by evening, marking our return from the remote Changthang region.

Our final full day in Ladakh is held as a buffer, built in to absorb any weather delays or road closures from the preceding days, and otherwise used for a relaxed exploration of sites closer to Leh. Depending on conditions, we visit Magnetic Hill to witness its curious optical phenomenon, and the Sangam viewpoint to document the striking confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers.

We continue on to Basgo Monastery, with its weathered mud-brick ruins offering a quieter, more textured contrast to the grand landscapes covered earlier in the trail, before a stop at Sindhu Ghat along the Indus. In the afternoon, we hold a dedicated editing and image review session as a group, followed by a final evening at Leh Market for street photography and some well-earned downtime before the trail concludes.

After breakfast, the expedition concludes in Leh. Participants will be transferred to the airport for their onward journey, bringing an end to eleven days of chasing light and dark skies across the Himalayas.
